From the Tiger SSP:
Zoya, an Amur tiger born in 2017 at Philadelphia Zoo, was the only survivor of five cubs. Due to lack of maternal care, Zoya's care staff intervened and began hand rearing her.
Meanwhile Lola, a Sumatran tiger at the Oklahoma City Zoo, had given birth to three cubs just days before.
With Zoya's optimal wellbeing as the goal, Philadelphia Zoo and Oklahoma City Zoo teamed together to create an incredible story of subspecies fostering success! Zoya was driven to Oklahoma City, covered in the scent of her foster siblings, and accepted by Lola!
With great care staff, a new foster mom, and siblings to play with, Zoya thrived and grew into a healthy adult. She moved to the Roosevelt Park Zoo in Minot, North Dakota in 2019, where she became a mother to her own cubs in 2022 and 2025.
For anyone looking to contribute to conservation by sharing this impactful story in a classroom or with little ones at home, Zoya's journey is documented in the 2025 award winning book, "A Family for Zoya: The True Story of an Endangered Cub," by Debra Kim Wolf, detailing the collaboration between zoos to save endangered species, and 100% of the author's profits support the Tiger Conservation Campaign. The book even features "Did You Know?" facts, habitat maps, and information on AZA conservation efforts, making it ideal for young readers interested in science and wildlife.🐯📖🐯
